Tax tips for Parents
Child support, child allowance or child support payments — as a parent, you can save a lot of money on your tax return if you follow a few tips. Here you'll find all the information you need about your claims and tax deductions — including tax tips for single parents.

Tax relief through child deductions
Parents can benefit from significant social security benefits in Switzerland. For every minor child or child in initial education (up to max. 25 years), the federal government grants a deduction of CHF 6,700 (as of 2026). At cantonal level, these deductions vary greatly and in family-friendly cantons such as Tessin or Zug can even be CHF 20,000 lie down.
Deduction for third-party child care
If children are cared for externally (e.g. in a daycare center, a daycare center or by a childminder), the costs can be deducted from their income. The federal government's maximum deduction in 2026 is CHF 25,500 per child. The prerequisite is that care is necessary due to the employment, education or incapacity of both parents (or the single parent).
Additional deductions and parental rates
In addition to basic deductions, married parents benefit from the beneficial direct federal tax Parental rate. In addition, there is a direct deduction from the tax amount (tax credit) per child. Insurance premiums for children can also be claimed up to a certain amount. In the case of separated parents, the child deduction is usually divided in half, provided that no alimony is paid, which can already be deducted separately.
Deadlines and important supporting documents
In most cantons, the submission deadline is March 31. For a smooth declaration, parents should provide documentation of daycare costs, confirmations of training courses of adult children and evidence of alimony received or paid. If necessary, an extension of the deadline can usually simply be applied for online.
